Day 02 : Ceningan Island Overnight Trips

While there might not be a great number of octopi under the sea around Ceningan Island, there is an awful lot of garden. Or more specifically, seaweed farms. Seaweed is the mainstay of the population of Ceningan and it can be seen everywhere, spread colorfully on tarpaulins, drying in the sun.

Ceningan is tucked behind the bigger, touristy island of Lembongan on Bali’s east coast. Life here is hot and relaxed. The seaweed farmers get up early to go out to sea, and rest in the heat of the early afternoon. Later, as the day cools, they go out again, and their boats can be seen crowding around their plantations, like a floating marketplace.

Go out with a farmer to see the seaweed plantations by foot or canoe. Learn how the seaweed is tied to frames to grow, and how it is harvested. If you’re game, have a go of carrying a basket of seaweed on your head, local style.

You can swim, snorkel and surf to your heart’s content. See a stunning array of fish and coral in the clear waters on the eastern tip of the island, or look for waves on the pounding southwestern coasts. Snorkeling gear is available, but bring your own surfboard.

Learn how to make some seaweed delicacies such as cakes and candies – much tastier than you’d expect!

We will continue our trip to Kiadan Pelaga Village.Situated 1100 meters above sea level, southeast of Mt Mangu, cool and green Kiadan Pelaga is a world away from the hustle and bustle of the coastal towns. The vegetation here is lush, and can be seen stretching away onto distant forested mountainsides. Closest to the village, however, the earth is devoted to the village’s ‘brown gold’- coffee. Activities you may choose from in Kiadan Pelaga include: Learning about, and helping with the coffee making process. Your village guide will bring you through each stage of the process, beginning from managing the plantation, picking the beans, drying, roasting and grinding. Along the way you’ll meet the farmers involved in each stage at that time, and learn the behind the scenes issues of staying afloat in the coffee business. Strolling through the village with your guide. This is your opportunity to hear about the unique aspects of Kiadan Pelaga history and culture. You will also learn about the natural resource management issues in the village. Stop to explore the village temple and a local spring, both rich with local beliefs. Trekking in the forest-gardens. Take to the mountains and enjoy the cool, earthy smells of the forest. Let your local guide tell you about the plants of the forest and the gardens and local conservation issues. You will reach a clear and clean river and hear the songs of native birds. You will be equipped with drinking water and a hiking stick as some of the slopes can be steep and slippery with lichen.

You will be greeted with a cup of organic Kiadan Pelaga coffee and Balinese snacks. A tasty Balinese lunch is provided on all day trips to Kiadan Pelaga. We will stay over night in the village, dinner, breakfast and lunch (if appropriate) will be provided.

On the east coast of Bali, surrounded by high mountains, lies an ancient fortress village called Tenganan. Dating back to at least the 11th century, Tenganan preserves certain ways life lost to the rest of Bali. It is regarded by the Balinese as a ‘senior’ village. The uniqueness of Tenganan is evident the moment of stepping through one of the four gates in the wall that encloses the entire the village – Tenganan has a feuding past. Grey stones pave the roads and wall off the houses, each with exactly the same layout as the next. Gentle giants, the beautiful Balinese buffalo, loiter freely in shady spots. A guided stroll around the village (recommended). As the layout of the village is tied in with cultural beliefs, this is the best way to get an idea of what makes Tenganan ‘tick’. Pat the buffalo, visit the temples and hear about the system of rule in the village and what it means to worship, as Tenganan does, “Dewa Indra”, the Hindu deity of war.

Forest trekking. The locals know the forest around Tenganan intimately. A trek into the mountains will take you past many small hidden temples. Your guide will tell you about the tress used for building, for foods and for medicines. You’ll also learn about local rulings for the use of the trees- for example certain fruits (such as durian) which can only be collected after they fall from the tree naturally. At the top you’ll get a birdseye view of Tenganan and a refreshing forest drink straight from the heart of the sweet enau fruit.

Sit down with a Tenganan woman or man and learn the craft of weaving. The teaching of Tenganan’s double weave is forbidden (and in any case too difficult!), but there are other forms that can be learned. No doubt you will gain a new appreciation for the skill of Tenganan craftspeople.
